ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines -- The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao is pouring in more relief and medical assistance to about 4,000 families affected by the ongoing intensified military campaign against the Abu Sayyaf group in Sulu.
Myrna Jo Henry, information officer of ARMM’s Humanitarian Emergency Action and Response Team (HEART), said Friday that, as of Sept. 5, close to 4,000 families from areas of at least five towns in Sulu had been displaced by the fighting.
Henry said there were no reported civilian casualties so far as residents have voluntarily moved out prior to the military offensive against the Abu Sayyaf group in some areas of the towns of Patikul, Maimbung, Indanan, Parang and Panamao.
She said Patikul, Maimbung, and Parang towns have the highest number of affected civilians.
She said ARMM Regional Vice Gov. Haroun Alrashid Lucman Jr. led the delivery of the humanitarian assistance with Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan II and Director Ramil Masukat of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
Henry said Lucman was in close coordination with the provincial government of Sulu to ensure the safety of the residents caught in the ongoing operation.
ARMM-HEART, a convergence of agencies that oversees preparedness and response in the region, has been responding to similar crises, including the previous military operations against the Abu Sayyaf group in Basilan province.
