Bulacan inmates, jail staff to undergo TB screening
MALOLOS, Philippines – Inmates as well as jail guards and staff of the Bulacan provincial jail will undergo screening for tuberculosis (TB).
The mass screening will start on Sept. 12 and run for eight consecutive weeks.
There are more than 3,000 inmates in the provincial jail, which should accommodate only 700.
Fernando Villanueva, provincial jail warden, said a separate jail facility for TB patients was constructed in 2014, and has 43 patients.
The project is being implemented in partnership with the Department of Health, United States Agency for International Development’s IMPACT project, Philippine Business for Social Progress and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Allan Fabella, service delivery specialist of IMPACT, said the screening process includes x-ray, examination of sputum as well as medication.
