Abra dump ordered closed

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, Philippines – A dump near Abra River in Barangay Calaba in Bangued, Abra has been closed.

The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources ordered the closure of the dump amid complaints from neighboring towns. 

Waste from the dump reportedly swamped downstream communities during heavy rains.

Joyce Ann Mangsat, EMB officer, said affected residents would have to create their compost pits and learn waste segregation as well as proper solid waste management.

Mangsat said the local government would gather only non-biodegradable materials such as water bottles, tin cans, tires and rubber.
