Grenade thrown at Sulu convent
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines - Suspected Abu Sayyaf militants lobbed and exploded a fragmentation grenade inside a Catholic convent Tuesday dawn in Jolo, Sulu, according to police.
The Sulu Provincial Police Office reported no casualty from the blast that rocked and caused tensions to nearby residents.
The police said the blast occurred about 5:40 a.m. which hit the Catholic Dominican residence at Kakuyugan Village, Barangay Asturias.
According to witnesses, two unidentified men onboard a motorcycle drove by and lobbed the fragmentation grenade.
The blast caused partial damages to properties as the suspects escaped towards unknown direction.
Police could not immediately pinpoint any suspect but said that the Mt. Carmel Cathedral has been previously targeted by the Abu Sayyaf group.
