26 bicycle riders killed in Manila road accidents in 2015
MANILA, Philippines - At least 26 bicycle riders and a pedestrian have been recorded killed by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in various bicycle related road accidents from January to December last year.
Road crash statistics on bicycle-related incidents recorded by the MMDA from January to December last year showed that of the figure, April had the most number of fatalities at five with May and November posting only one each.
The MMDA also recorded at least 932 persons injured in bicycle-related road accidents in the given period with March and May posting the highest numbers at 88 injured each. According to the MMDA, there were at least three non-fatal injuries from bicycle-related road accidents reported per day during the covered period.
Of the 27 deaths related to bicycle road accidents from January to December last year, the MMDA said Manila posted the most number of victims at eight, followed by Quezon City (4), Valenzuela and Parañaque (3); Caloocan (2); and Marikina, Malabon, Navotas, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Pasay and Taguig (1).
According to the MMDA, there were no reported bicycle-related deaths for the covered period in Mandaluyong, Pasig, San Juan, Makati and Pateros.
Of the reported non-fatal injuries related to bicycle road accidents, Quezon City had the most number at 141, followed by Pasig City (100) and Las Piñas (99). Only Pateros did not report any injuries related to bicycle road accidents, the MMDA said.
Of those reported injured, 949 were the ones driving the bicycle, 128 were passengers while 44 were pedestrians.
