Red tide alert up in Eastern Samar
MANILA, Philippines - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has imposed a shellfish ban in Eastern Samar.
In shellfish bulletin 22, BFAR said shellfish gathered in Matarinao Bay were found positive for the algae that produces the red tide toxin.
BFAR said shellfish gathered in Irong-Irong, Cambatutay, Villareal and Maqueda Bays are not safe for human consumption as they remain positive for paralytic shellfish poison.
BFAR said fish, squid, shrimp and crab are safe to eat provided they are fresh and washed thoroughly and internal organs are removed before cooking.
The rest of the coastal waters in the country continue to be free from red tide toxins.
