Police raid Maguindanao marijuana farm

Philstar.com
MAGUINDANAO, Philippines -- Police on Monday uprooted more than 5,000 full-grown marijuana plants in a hinterland farm surrounded by huge forest trees in Barangay Sapad in Matanog, Maguindanao.

Senior Inspector Ronald de Leon, spokesperson of the regional police office in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, said the plants, which the raiding team immediately burned using kerosene, was worth around P300,000.

The raid was jointly carried out by personnel of the Matanog municipal police office, local officials and barangay leaders.

De Leon said police intelligence agents are now trying to locate the owner of the marijuana plantation, initially identified only as Kanakan, an ethnic Iranun.

Barangay officials said Kanakan has also been peddling methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) in Matanog and in nearby Kapatagan town in Lanao del Sur.

De Leon said the Matanog police office learned of the presence of the marijuana farm from barangay officials, who helped lead the raiding team to its exact location in Sitio Masalay.

De Leon said investigators took samples of the uprooted plants to be used as evidence in filing a criminal case against Kanakan and his accomplices.

Local commanders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front had assured authorities they will help locate Kanakan.
