6 dead in Maguindanao highway accident

Philstar.com
MAGUINDANAO, Philippines -- Six commuters, among them a minor, were killed on Sunday when a speeding passenger vehicle hit a dump truck in a secluded stretch of a highway in Datu Odin Sinsuat town.

Responding investigators said four of the victims died on the spot from head injuries sustained in the accident.

The six fatalities were passengers of a violet passenger Toyota Town Ace en route to Isulan town in Sultan Kudarat province.

The passenger vehicle sideswiped the truck, which was loaded with sand and gravel aggregates, on a stretch of the highway in Barangay Pinguiaman, south of Datu Odin Sinsuat.

The stretch of the concrete highway where the two vehicles collided was made slippery by heavy rains several hours before.

Chief Inspector Lendsy Sinsuat of the municipal police said traffic probers are still to determine who between the drivers of the two vehicles was at fault.

Residents of Barangay Pinguiaman who witnessed the accident said many other injured passengers were rushed to a hospital in Cotabato City by policemen.

Sinsuat said probers are now looking into the assertions by some of the injured passengers that the driver of the Toyota Town Ace was busy using his mobile phone just before the collision.
