Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines – The Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Oriental province erupted at 9:19 a.m. on Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolvcs) said in an advisory.

The eruption which is still ongoing produced a volcanic plume 400 meters above the crater.

The plumes, grayish to white in color, are drifting towards the direction of west northwest.

According to the same advisory posted on the agency's social media account, “the notification is being issued as initial information on the volcano’s activity for appropriate action of concerned agencies.”

In an advisory issued at 8 a.m., Phivolcs said three volcanic earthquakes were detected from Kanlaon in the past 24 hours.

Alert Level 1 remains hoisted at Kanlaon Volcano, which means that it is in a state of unrest.

Phivolcs reminded the local government units and the public that entry into the four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited and pilots should avoid flying near the volcano’s summit, as airborne ash from a sudden eruption can be hazardous. - Kristine Daguno-Bersamina
