Kabataan Partylist hits “door-to-door” enrolment

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Kabataan Partylist claimed that the "door-to-door enrolment" conducted by the Department of Education for the incoming senior high school students underscores the fact that the K to 12 program does not really serve its intended purpose.

Partylist Representative Sarah Elago said it also validated their expectation of a low enrolment turnout in Grade 11.

Elago said DepEd failed to recognize that that the additional years of schooling under the K to 12 program is a huge economic burden on the part of the family.

"The door-to-door enrolment campaign signals the high no-show or drop-out rate that we'll be witnessing come Monday," Elago said.

Kabataan Partylist earlier estimated that over a million of Grade 10 completers failed to enroll for Grade 11. Despite of it Elago said that DepEd continues to flaunt that the K to 12 program is an end-all solution to improve basic education.

"Yet with the low enrolment rate we're witnessing, we can clearly see that the program is only pushing students to drop out of school," Elago said.

Elago earlier said that the problems created by K to 12 are not merely 'birth pains' but are deeply-seated and hits hard at home.

Elago said the Kabataan Partylist is calling on President-elect Rodrigo Duterte to scrap the program and provide immediate remedial measures, including the option to let Grade 10 students have their high school diplomas already and proceed to college. (FREEMAN)
