Over 4,000 arrested for gun ban violation

Bebot Sison Jr., Cecille Suerte Felipe - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – With 11 more days left before the gun ban expires, the Philippine National Police (PNP) disclosed yesterday that a total of 4,456 individuals have been arrested for violating the policy.

The PNP reminded the public that the ban is still very much in effect, noting only police and military officers as well as law enforcement agents with exemption from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) could carry firearms during the period.

The gun ban will be in effect until June 8, the end of the election period.

PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Wilben Mayor said 102 government employees were among the 4,456 individuals arrested for violating the gun ban imposed by the Comelec.

The ban was meant to ensure honest, orderly and peaceful elections.

Records from the PNP National Operation Center showed of the 102 government employees arrested, 34 were from the PNP, two were firemen, 20 were military personnel and 36 were workers.

Mayor said only police and military officers on duty as well as members of other security government agencies are allowed to carry firearms in their areas of responsibility.

“The penalty for election violation is from one to six-years imprisonment and perpetual disqualification from the service. If you are a government employee, you will be dismissed and forever barred from working in public office, and cannot vote,” he said.
