Makati Mayor Kid Peña expects to win in May polls

MANILA, Philippines - Makati Mayor Romulo “Kid” Peña is confident of winning a fresh mandate come Monday’s polls against Makati second district Rep. Mar-Len Abigail “Abby” Binay-Campos saying the city’s silent majority has awakened.

Speaking to reporters during his first Miting de Avance in the city’s second district, Peña said surveys conducted on the city have shown that he is now being favored by voters to lead the city.

“Before talagang lamang sila (Binays), pero tulad nung ibang mga laban ko, in the past 2010, 2013,  talaga from behind palagi, ngayon tingin ko magpakatotoo sila, magpakatotoo sila sa survey, right now hindi na ganun lamang na tayo sa survey,” Peña said.

“Ngayon sa totoo lang, feeling namin nagbago na ang Makati at marami ‘yung silent majority na ‘di pa nagsasalita ngayon. Yun ang bubuhos na boto pagdating po ng May 9,” he added.

Peña held a second Miting de Avance Thursday afternoon at the city’s first district that has long been considered as the stronghold of the Binay family.

According to Peña, he and his slate have decided to hold two separate Miting de Avances at the city’s two districts to prove to the Binay family that they have already captured the support of the city’s voters.

“Kasi gusto naming patunayan sa kanila (Binay family), na na-capture na namin ang crowd at ang taong bayan ng district two. Ang dami nyan. Bukas makalawa uulitin din namin to sa district one na ganun din, o mas marami pa. Sila kung magpameeting de avance isa lang. Bakit? Kasi walang taong nagpupunta sa kanila. At alam niyo po yung mga tao kinukuha po nila galing pa sa labas ng Makati,” he said.

Meanwhile, Binay-Campos also expressed confidence of winning on Monday as she thanked the endorsement of the Iglesia ni Cristo.

Binay-Campos also assured Makati residents that should she win as the city’s next mayor, she would continue with the programs that have been started by his father Vice President Jejomar Binay who also served as the city’s mayor.

“Buong pakumbaba kong tinatanggap ang tiwala at suporta ng Iglesia ni Cristo. Nangangako kaming lahat sa Team Binay na ipagpatuloy namin ang sinimulan ni VP Jojo Binay. Ang serbisyong subok na ay dadagdagan pa ng serbisyong Abby Binay,’ she said in a statement.
