Blackout hits Samal Island

The Philippine Star

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The anchor of a cargo vessel hit the submarine cable of the Davao del Norte Electric Cooperative (Daneco), leaving Samal Island without electricity since Thursday.

The incident occurred in Barangay Babak at 9:53 a.m. on Thursday, said Charles Bejod, Daneco manager.

Bejod said it would take at least two weeks to restore electricity in the island.

“We are currently checking the extent of the damage so that we could make the proper move right away and energize the island again,” he said.

Bejod said they are also preparing legal action against the owner of the vessel.

Samal Island, which is five minutes by boat to Davao City, is host to more than 200 beach resorts, including the world-renowned Pearl Farm.
