Air Force jets' fly-bys rattle Ortigas offices

Patricia Lourdes Viray - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — The fly-bys of the two brand-new FA-50PH jets of the Philippine Air Force caused alarm for some offices in Ortigas business center in Metro Manila.

The new fighter jets were reportedly flying low over the Ortigas area on Monday and Tuesday, rattling windows in office buildings.

The Philippine Air Force said that a high-opener pass will be conducted by the two new fighter jets during the 30th anniversary of the EDSA People Power on Thursday. It will highlight the Armed Forces of the Philippines' (AFP) transformation and capability upgrade.

"And while the (FA-50PHs) also made an appearance during the 80th AFP anniversary last December 21 at Clark Air Base, Pampanga, it had to be repeated so that Filipinos could see and feel that their AFP has (indeed) transformed," AFP public affairs office chief Col. Noel Detoyato said.

Two combat utility helicopters will also conduct a flower drop at the EDSA Shrine in Ortigas Avenue on Thursday. The participation of the Air Force was requested by the EDSA-1 organizers, according to a report.

The newly acquired fighter jets of the Air Force escorted the plane carrying President Benigno Aquino III as it entered Philippine airspace last week. It was the first time since 2005 that the Air Force performed its traditional role to escort the president while in Philippine airspace.
