Don’t go near Mayon crater, trekkers told
LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines—The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has warned mountaineers against going up the crater of Mayon Volcano despite the downgrading of the alert level.
“It’s dangerous due to small explosions and rockfalls… entering the permanent danger zone is hazardous...mountain climbers should not go up the crater of an active volcano,” Phivolcs director Renato Solidum told a radio interview yesterday.
In a bulletin on Friday, Phivolcs lowered the alert level from two to one. “This means observational parameters have returned to baseline levels and no magmatic eruption is foreseen,” it said.
“In the event of a renewed increase in any or combination of the monitoring parameters, the alert status may step up once again to alert level 1,” it added.
Phivolcs said people living near the volcano should also remain vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in case of heavy rains. Celso Amo, Janvic Mateo
