Abu Sayyaf bandit slain

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – A suspected member of the Abu Sayyaf was killed while another was captured in separate incidents yesterday.

The bandit, who remained unidentified, was shot dead during a scuffle with a soldier who responded to a hacking incident involving another soldier.

M/Sgt. Esmeraldo Manugay was patrolling the periphery of the headquarters of the 10th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Buhanginan in Patikul, Sulu when the suspect appeared from behind and hacked him, said Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado, commander of Joint Task Group Sulu.   

Meanwhile, Abdulla Mutalib, alias Yusop, was captured in Barangay Matikang in Lantawan, Basilan at 12:55 a.m. by members of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit and 55th and 54th Special Action Force Co.
