Village chief shot dead, treasurer kidnapped

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines – A village chairman was killed while a barangay treasurer was kidnapped in Echague town in Isabela yesterday and on Monday.

Nestor Medina, 53, chairman of Barangay Rumang-ay, was on his way to an assembly of village leaders in Barangay Dammang West around 9 a.m. when motorcycle-riding men fired at him.

Medina suffered multiple gunshot wounds, said Senior Superintendent Leon Rafael, Isabela police director.

Echague Vice Mayor Katrina Kiat said Medina was a supporter of her mother, Mayor Melinda Kiat.

Medina’s daughter, Nobleza Agustin, said prior to the incident, an emissary, whom she refused to identify, had offered her father money. ?

Meanwhile, Orlando Lagasca, treasurer of Barangay Bacradal, was reportedly taken from his house on Monday.

Police are investigating if the two cases are related.?
