MMDA asks Comelec to help regulate campaign rallies

Mike Frialde - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will be asking the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to help regulate the conduct of campaign rallies and motorcades in the Metro during this campaign season saying that such activities could trigger traffic jams.

MMDA chairman Emerson Carlos said he has already raised the concern with Comelec chairman Andres Bautista.

“Yun ang pinag-usapan namin ni Chairman Andy Bautista. Baka kasi pwedeng ma-regulate yung paggamit ng daan kapag magkakaroon ng rallies and motorcades,” said Carlos.

Carlos said that it would be better if politicians would inform the MMDA that they intend to conduct such activities beforehand so that proper permits are given and a traffic management plan will be laid out.

“Pwede namang humingi sa amin ng permit before sila mag-hold ng rally. Kasi andaming apektado niyan,” said Carlos.

According to Carlos, the Comelec has positively reacted to the MMDA’s suggestion and that the poll body may come out with a resolution on it.

“Kasi kung ikaw ang motorista tapos ang makita mo na ang dahilan ng traffic ay may nagrarally sa daan, magagalit ka din syempre di ba?” said Carlos.
