Ex-Rizal guv welcomes indictment over fertilizer fund scam

MANILA, Philippines - Former Rizal Governor Casimiro Ynares Jr. has welcomed the filing of graft charges against him by the Office of the Ombudsman in connection with his alleged involvement in the P728-million fertilizer fund scam.
Ynares said the filing of the criminal case will give him the opportunity to clear his name.
"I welcome the move of our Ombudsman to finally resolve the investigation of said case. I believe that this will give us the opportunity to eventually bring out the truth at the proper forum," Ynares said in a statement.
He also denied that the provincial government during his term had misused the fund intended for the Farm Inputs and Farm Implements Program of the Department of Agriculture in February 2004.
"We will have the chance to prove that the public funds in question have been properly used and accounted for, and that there never was any intention on the part of the provincial government to misuse the said funds.
"I have full faith and trust in the fairness and objectivity of our justice system and I am confident that, in the end, colleagues and I shall be vindicated," he said.
Aside from Ynares, the Ombudsman also indicted the members of the Bids and Awards Committee involved in the alleged anomalous bidding and purchase of 2,455 bottles of liquid fertilizer in 2004 amounting to P3,682,500.
Ynares's wife Rebecca 'Nini" Ynares is the current Rizal governor while his son Casimiro "Jun" Ynares III is the Antipolo City mayor.
