Woman dies, 6 hurt in Kalinga mishap

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines  – A 23-year-old woman died while six others were injured when a sport utility vehicle (SUV) driven by an allegedly drunk engineer hit them in Tabuk City, Kalinga Sunday.

Monette Carlos died while being treated at the Kalinga Provincial Hospital while her companion Felyjane Callueng, 18, was listed in critical condition in the same hospital, Superintendent Francisco Bulwayan, city police chief, said.

Reports said Carlos was driving a motorcycle with Callueng as her passenger when an SUV driven by Gerry Ramos Bais, 50, a government engineer, rear-ended them in Barangay Lacnog.

Bais fled but figured in another accident three kilometers away from the first mishap.

Bais hit a tricycle driven by Ruben Pagtud, 29, who – along with his passengers Richwell Paway, 17; Joy Balwog Alos, 40; and her children David, 9, and two-month-old Christine – was thrown from the vehicle.

The victims were taken to the Kalinga Provincial Hospital for treatment.

Bais was arrested by responding police officers.

Meanwhile, in Iloilo, 62-year-old Vilma Soliva died after she was hit by a pickup truck in Molo district in Iloilo City Sunday.

Soliva was declared dead on arrival at the The Medical City, said Superintendent Rhea Santos, chief of the city traffic investigation and enforcement unit.

The victim was crossing Avanceña street in Barangay Fundidor when she was hit by a pickup truck driven by Ronel Felicedario, 27, a driver of a parish priest in Tigbauan town.

Felicedario, who failed to present a driver’s license, claimed he fled for fear that he would be beaten up by bystanders.

He surrendered to the Molo police hours after the accident.

In Camarines Norte, two person also died and two others were injured in a collision involving a motorcycle and a multicab in Sipocot town.

Motorcycle driver Jayson Barios, 20, and his passenger, Abner Nasi, 17, were declared dead on arrival at the Sipocot District Hospital where Helen Abordo, 64, and Alyssa Joy Subia, 11, both passengers of the multicab, were also taken to a hospital for treatment. – With Jennifer Rendon, Francis Elevado
