5 Abus slain in military strike
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – Five Abu Sayyaf bandits were reported killed in an attack by soldiers who overran the group’s camp in Basilan on Sunday, security officials said.
The troops under the Joint Task Group Basilan launched the attack at around about 7:30 a.m. in the hinterlands of Sumisip town, said Capt. Maria Rowena Muyuela, spokesperson for the Western Mindanao Command.
“The fighting raged for more than an hour and resulted in the death of five bandits,” Muyuela said.
An hour later, the soldiers and civilian volunteers cleared and secured the Abu camp, said Col. Rolando Joselito Bautista, chief of the Army’s 104th Brigade.
Bautista said the troopers found at the camp trenches and foxholes, a shotgun, ammunition, a solar charger, wet cell battery, and documents detailing the group’s activity. He said the camp could accommodate about 50 people.
