2 killed, 1 wounded in Cebu shootout
MANILA, Philippines - Two suspected armed robbers were killed while another was wounded during a shootout with police Tuesday early morning in Cebu City.
Killed during the firefight were Denmark Rivera and a certain Jay-ar, police said.
Another suspect, Joseph Cuevas, sustained a gunshot wound on the knee during the shootout.
Initial report said that two motorcycles, with two men riding in tandem on one of the motorbikes, made a U-turn after seeing a police checkpoint along N. Bacalso Avenue around 1:30 a.m.
The policemen, on board a patrol car, chased and cornered the suspects at Plaza Sugbo, Barangay Mambaling, where the gunmen fired at the lawmen.
After the brief gunbattle, policemen recovered from the scene a .38 revolver, a .22 magnum revolver, several ammunition and a bonnet.
In a radio interview, Cuevas denied that the guns and bullets were theirs and that they only tried to avoid passing the police checkpoint because they have no drivers' license.
