9 inmates bolt Rizal jail

Ed Amoroso - The Philippine Star

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines – Nine inmates of the Angono police detention cell in Rizal escaped at the height of Tropical Storm Mario at dawn Friday.

Three of the inmates – Joharry Samson and Rene Reboquio, who are both facing robbery charges, and Joel Titular, who is facing frustrated murder charges – surrendered yesterday.

A manhunt has been launched for the six other inmates, identified as Ernesto Montecalvo, Michael Alex, John Dave Cruz, Jeron Noblejas, Joel Jose and Victor Casiguran.

Senior Superintendent Bernabe Balba, Rizal police director, said the inmates destroyed the ceiling of their cell at around 3 a.m.

Balba said the other inmates tried to call the attention of the guards, who failed to hear them due to the winds and rain.

He said the fugitives’ cell was located at the back of the police station.
