SONA protesters converge early on Commonwealth Avenue
MANILA, Philippines - Around 500 protesters from different people's organizations early Monday converged along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City in line with 5th State of the Nation Address of President Benigno Aquino III.
The protesters, who were seen converging as early as 5 a.m., managed to marched from the Quezon City Memorial Center up to the Ever-Gotesco Mall, where they were stopped by policemen. The area had been barricaded with concrete railings and barbed wires.
The protesters, who mostly wore blackshirts, set up a makeshift stage along the highway and conducted a mini-program, where they assailed the government's controversial Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP).
The DAP, which was created to pump-prime the country's economy, has been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme court.
President Aquino, who is scheduled to deliver his fifth State of the Nation Address at 3 p.m., is facing several impeachment complainst filed by militant groups led by the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan in connection with the DAP.
