5 MNLF fighters slain in latest Zambo City clash

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Five more fighters of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) were killed as fighting continues in Zamboanga City on Saturday, the military said.

"There were five more of the enemies killed," said Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, spokesman of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Zagala said that there are now a total of 102 MNLF members killed in the crisis, which is now on its 13th day.

Zagala said that the military is trying to finish the crisis as soon as possible without additional civilian casualty.

The government said that at least 10 civilians have been killed in the city since the supporters of MNLF leader Nur Misuari infiltrated its villages last September 9.

He said the residents of barangays Sta. Barbara and Sta. Catalina to remain indoors to avoid being caught in crossfire.
