MANILA, Philippines - Informal settlers in Manila will march to several government agencies on Monday to protest the pending demolition of their homes to give way to a road-widening project.
The members of the urban poor group Samahan ng mga Magkakapit-bahay sa Road 10 will protest the 30-Day Notice of Demolition that they received last August 1. The notice gave the residents up to August 31 to vacate their homes.
The notice was signed by Department of Public Works and Highways Regional Director Reynaldo Tagudando, the group said.
Aside from the DPWH office, the informal settlers will also march to the Manila City Hall and the Tondo Office of the National Housing Authority to protest the putting up of parking lots for cargo trucks.
During the picket-rally, the residents are set to tear and burn their Notice of Demolitions to show their protest to the pending demolition.
They will also protest the Manila City Hall as they will remind Mayor Erap Estrada of his promises during the election campaign that he will not allow dislocation of Tondo residents.
The urban poor group will also air their rejection to the relocation sites being offered to them in areas of San Pedro in Laguna and Bocaue in Bulacan.
