PAF acquisition of long-range aircraft, fighter jets 'almost a done deal'

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines - The Department of National Defense (DND) and the Philippine Air Force's (PAF) plan for the acquisition of long-range patrol aircraft and 12 fighter jets lead-in aircraft is almost “a done deal," said Air Force Chief Lt. Gen. Lauro Catalino dela Cruz on Tuesday. 

Dela Cruz told Philippine STAR that the plans are part of their two programs in upgrading the defense system for the PAF to safeguard the country's territorial sovereignty.

“It’s almost a done deal in terms of decision. We are preparing the papers for submission to the president for approval,” Dela Cruz said.

Dela Cruz said they also intend to procure 12 lead-in fighters as part of the program upgrade.

The PAF chief said they have already chosen the kind of fighter jets but declined to reveal its type as there was no approval yet from the president. 

“We intend to procure 12 lead-in fighters. I can’t officially tell you that kasi wala pang approval. But meron na tayong napipili and we are hoping for the approval of the president,” Dela Cruz said.

Dela Cruz also could not determine yet as to how much it will cost the acquisition of the long range patrol aircraft and the lead-in fighters.

However, he said the AFP has a P15-billion budget that has been approved per year as part of a P75-billion five-year project that they are laying down.
