MANILA, Philippines - The Light Rail Transit (LRT) Authority on Friday announced that it will offer free rides in its two lines in Manila during the 116th death anniversary of national hero Jose Rizal on Sunday.
LRT Authority spokesman Hernando Cabrera said the LRT 1 and 2's "Libreng Sakay" will be implemented from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
The LRT-1 links Roosevelt in Quezon City to Baclaran in Paranaque City while LRT-2 links C.M. Recto Avenue in Manila to Marcos Highway in Santolan, Pasig.
Meanwhile, the LRT reiterated it will continue to impose the "no inspection, no ride" policy as part of its security measures.
This coming December 30 also marks the 12th anniversary of the Rizal Day bombings in 2000. Terrorists exploded five bombs in succession, including one inside an LRT coach at the Blumentritt Station in Manila.
Several people were killed and dozens were injured in the LRT coach bombing.
"Please bear with whatever inconvenience that the required security checks at the stations may bring you. This is for everybody’s safety," Cabrera said.
The LRTA said the LRT transports an average of 750,000 people every day for both Line 1 and Line 2.
