'Pablo' deaths jump to 418; 383 more missing

MANILA, Philippines - The death toll from typhoon 'Pablo' jumped to 418 people and 383 more remained missing as retrieval and rescue operations continued for the third day in devastated provinces in Mindanao.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported this morning that only 73 of the cadavers were recovered, mostly in New Bataan town in Compostela Valley, have been identified.
A total of 110 bodies, which were recovered from areas in New Bataan swamped by mud and floodwaters at the height of the typhoon, have yet to be identified.
The agency said that 1,033,364 families or 5,141,356 people were affected by the typhoon in Mimaropa particularly in Palawan, Eastern, Western and Central Visayas and Northern Mindanao, Davao and Caraga regions.
The NDRRMC said that of number of affected families, only 64,470 are staying in more than 500 evacuation centers in the affected areas, most of which are in Mindanao.
On Thursday, the devastation of the typhoon became clearer as rescue teams and relief workers and volunteers enter more isolated areas in Mindanao.
A total of 15,850 houses were damaged by the heavy rains and strong winds brought on by the typhoon. Of this number, 10,320 are totally damaged or leveled to the ground.
The government has pegged the typhoon's damage at more than P4 billion.
