Five films to watch this Lent

Joyce Jimenez - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — Holy Week is the time when television networks don’t follow their regular weekly schedule.

So it may feel boring, especially for some who do not have cable channels or have limited access to the Internet.

Here are five films that you could watch and enjoy while teaching you valuable lessons about life and faith.

'Passion of the Christ'

It may just bring onscreen what was written in the Scriptures, but many who have seen "Passion of the Christ" said this version has an extra umpf in someone’s heart.

The film, directed and written by Mel Gibson, went a notch higher by graphically showing persecutions that Jesus Christ had to endure, and arguably no other human can.

'Prince of Egypt'

What better way to introduce the Bible to your kids than to let them watch it first through a film like "Price of Egypt"?

Aside from narrating the life of Moses, kids and even the young at heart, would learn the value of family, importance of unity, and of course, trusting God’s will.

'Tanging Yaman'

Kids from the ‘90s would know how "Tanging Yaman" can make everyone cry, even those who claim they have a heart of stone.

It is a story about a big family kept together by their sick mother and separated by their differences and issues with each other. Yet as their mother’s sickness gets worse, they slowly find their way to forgiveness and finally live in peace.

'Anak'

This film that stars Vilma Santos and Claudine Barretto contributed to the awareness of what overseas Filipino workers go through to keep their family together.

Being away for years and after her husband’s death, Josie (Santos) finally decides to stay in the Philippines and look after her children. Yet her eldest child, Carla (Barretto), resents her, forcing her to struggle to keep the family together.

'The Bucket List'

Many may not be familiar with this film starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, but be ready because this will make you cry buckets of tears.

It is a story about cancer patients Edward (Nicholson) and Carter (Freeman), who decide to go on a trip and do everything they want to do before they die. As they tick off one box at a time, they find out things in life they have been neglecting all those years.
