Modern Living

Adventure and commitment

SECOND WIND - Barbara Gonzalez-Ventura - The Philippine Star

I can’t believe it’s October already. The days slip so quickly by. The years just melt like ice cubes left in noonday sun. Our minds have a way of traveling back and forth through time remembering the grayness of the sky when we were turning 32 staring out of our office window, aware of aging for the first time in our lives. I remember that.  I had my first age crisis in my 30s and then again in my 50s. After the trauma of turning 50 I got over it. I turned 70 last year and I tell people —  so what? So I am old now. Who cares?

Let’s look at my hair. I have at last found a lopsided hairstyle that becomes me. I am committed to it. My hair is turning white and I don’t have the courage to let it run completely white because it adds years and I look 90. I used to color it brown-black but that was too dark. So I colored it auburn but that came out orange. Then I tried burgundy. It was beautiful newly dyed but after two shampoos it turned orange again. I think my white hair will turn orange no matter what color I apply.

One day walking through Greenhills I saw colored hairspray out on the market I think because Halloween is coming and there’s a desire for colored hairspray. So I bought violet. Before I go out I randomly spray my hair violet. It looks stunning  — black with small streaks of orange and violet, which is, believe it or not, a discreet color. People looking at you think they’re imagining seeing violet in your hair. It’s a wonderful solution.

Then I ran out of violet hairspray so I went back to buy and they had no more violet.  I ordered six tubes. They haven’t called me to say it’s available. I have gone and checked a few times, they still don’t have it so I’ve settled for blue. More or less the same effect. So now I’m happy with my hair except when I dye it next, I might try dark brown. Let’s see if that turns orange.

Now let’s look at my face. I don’t look smooth and young anymore but I am not as lined and wrinkled as I once imagined I would be at 71. I admit I take two capsules of Carica’s Gano Derma capsules because a friend told me it was good for the skin.  I have been taking it maybe for six months now and my skin has improved.  It is not so wrinkled and it feels softer and smoother.  Ganoderma lucidum is a mushroom that they dry, grind and powder and put into capsules.

Also I still take Stem Enhance. As you know Stem Enhance is a blue green algae from Lake Namath in Oregon. You take three capsules when you wake up every morning at least half an hour before breakfast.  It goes to your bone marrow.  Your bone marrow is your body’s main manufacturer of stem cells.  Stem Enhance goes to your bone marrow and makes it produce three to four million stem cells more to give you additional energy during the day and wonderful sleep so at night.  It replaces all your dead or dying cells and stimulates the growth of new cells.  Over time it makes you look younger. And over time it makes you lose weight. When I started taking it I had just stopped smoking and put on 30 pounds. That was in 2001. But I refused to diet.  I said I will just look like an elephant forever.

Last time I weighed I had lost 20 pounds without dieting. Ok I kept the extra 10 pounds but they stretch my face.

I ran into an old friend I hadn’t seen in many years. In the course of our conversation I had to get something a moderate distance from where we were. Wait, I said, I’ll get it.  When I came back he said, You still walk so well. Did he think my legs would buckle under me?  But the more I thought about that incident the more I was convinced that that was because of Stem Enhance, which I strongly recommend for stroke patients.  People I meet now cannot believe that once I had a stroke.  But you have to commit yourself to it.  Then you will feel as young as I do.

So how does one feel and look young? You must have the spirit of adventure that will make you try violet hairspray or even fuschia. It also comes in fuschia. You must further venture into the fields of Gano Derma and Stem Enhance and commit yourself to it for at least six months. And you must allow yourself to wonder a lot about your life and what you have learned from it  and share the lessons with other people.  That will make your growing old worthwhile.
