Bayani inspired by GMA’s support

- Michael Punongbayan -
Two recent court rulings questioning traffic schemes of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) may be causing Chairman Bayani Fernando headaches these days, but President Arroyo’s encouraging words continue to give him strength to perform his job.

Knowing that he still has the trust and confidence of his boss and inspired by those who believe in him and his work, Fernando said he will continue to do his best to serve the people.

The MMDA chief said he draws strength from the President’s show of support for the way he runs the MMDA despite attacks on his style of leadership.

Some critics have asked him to resign, others have threatened to sue him, while others seek to abolish the very agency he heads and runs as a member of the Arroyo Cabinet.

Fernando said he is also encouraged by Metro Manilans who believe in his thrusts and methods of managing and putting order in the metropolis.

He said he also enjoys the support of majority of Metro Manila mayors.

"The Chairman is grateful and is inspired to do more in improving Metro Manila and our services to the people," MMDA general manager Robert Nacianceno said.

Nacianceno, who relayed Mrs. Arroyo’s statement of support to Fernando by phone, said the MMDA chief is humbled and strengthened by the President’s words.

Fernando was in Berlin, Germany attending the 8th World Metropolis Conference when he heard the news following a press conference in Malacañang.
