PDEA gets P90.4-M equipment to boost drug war

Emmanuel Tupas - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) acquired around P90.4 million worth of equipment to boost the Duterte administration’s war on drugs, an official said yesterday.

PDEA chief Aaron Aquino said the equipment would step up the capability of the agency’s operating units in combating the drug menace.

“With the persistent threat of illegal drugs, the PDEA continues to build up its capabilities, augmenting its operating units and drug enforcement officers with additional resources to thrive well in the campaign against drugs,” Aquino told reporters.

He said the equipment would be distributed to PDEA national and regional offices across the country.

Among the equipment the agency purchased are 753 tactical helmets and 23 reloading units worth P25,714,995.

Aquino said the firearm reloading and protective equipment would provide better protection to PDEA agents.

The PDEA also bought 20 remote-controlled drones and 166 handheld radios for P10,270,000.

The agency acquired 470 printers and 100 laptop computers amounting to P11,293,245.

Aquino said they procured 100 body cameras worth P2.9 million to be worn by drug enforcement officers during anti-narcotics operations.

The PDEA chief called on members of the media to join their operations to ensure  transparency.

“Reporters can also wear our bullet-proof vests. We have a lot of ballistic helmets, which they can use,” Aquino said.

The PDEA also purchased P40.2 million worth of four-wheeled vehicles and motorcycles.

Aquino said additional equipment, including 560 assault rifles from Israel and 200 body cameras would be delivered within the year.
