MANILA, Philippines — At least 70 drivers of public utility vehicles (PUVs) were pulled over by authorities yesterday in Metro Manila in line with the government’s “anti-usok, anti-bulok” campaign.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and Inter-Agency Council on Traffic (IACT) spearheaded  the crackdown on old vehicles and smoke belchers.

LTFRB board member and spokesperson Aileen Lizada said citation tickets were issued to 48 motorists for driving PUVs with defective seatbelts, worn-out tires and other violations.

Thirteen UV Express vans, four passenger jeepneys and four tricycles were impounded for being colorum.

Hundreds of jeepney commuters were stranded as some PUVs did not ply their routes to avoid apprehension.

Transport group Samahan ng Tsuper at Operators Nationwide said they monitored stranded passengers along Baclaran in Parañaque, Pasig City, Quezon City and Manila.

Lizada said they deployed eight buses to transport affected commuters. The local government of Manila also deployed 20 multicabs.
