2 dead, 2 hurt in Sampaloc fire

MANILA, Philippines — Two persons died and two others were injured in a fire that struck a residential building in Sampaloc, Manila yesterday morning.
 
Arson probers identified the fatalities as Gerardo Lopez, 50, and Anastacio Cruz, 80. 
 
Senior Fire Officer 3 Sonny Lacuban said the blaze broke out at a two-story residential building in Sampaloc at past 10 a.m.
 
Lacuban said the fire reached the fourth alarm before it was declared under control at around 11:30 a.m.
 
Fire Officer 1 John Natividad and volunteer Ricky Catle suffered minor injuries.
 
They were taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.
 
Authorities later recovered the bodies of Lopez and Cruz.
 
Lacuban said the fire could have been caused by an illegal electrical connection.
