Manila jail inmates take equivalency test
MANILA, Philippines — At least 877 inmates of the Manila City Jail (MCJ) took the National Accreditation and Equivalency examination of the Department of Education’s Alternative Learning System (ALS) yesterday.
MCJ spokesman Senior Inspector Jayrex Bustinera said 243 inmates took the elementary level exam while 634 participated in the high school equivalency test.
The event – which was undertaken by ALS Education program supervisor Ma. Cristita Blanco, MCJ Inmates Welfare and Development Section chief Chief Inspector Rosielyn Carta and Superintendent Randel Latoza – was aimed at encouraging inmates to mend their ways and prepare them for their return to society.
The program has attracted hundreds of inmates yearly, according to Carta.
