JV seeks probe of CAAP over skyscrapers

Paolo Romero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito yesterday said he would file a resolution to probe officials of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) for allowing the construction of structures that obstruct air traffic.

Ejercito, vice chairman of the Senate committee on public services, said the construction of skyscrapers near airports poses danger to the public.

He was referring to the almost-finished Aeon Tower in Davao City, which is reportedly standing directly on the flight path of aircraft landing or taking off from the Davao International Airport.

The senator also cited the Cypress Towers along C-5 Road in Taguig.

The structures have prompted the CAAP to issue Notices to Airmen several times, warning pilots of the risks in landing and takeoff.

Ejercito said the CAAP also allowed the construction of a private hangar at the end of the runway of the Clark International Airport, which was used as an alternative landing site of aircraft diverted from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport when its Instrument Landing System was not operational.

“Why is CAAP allowing this and compromising the safety of the passengers and aircraft?” Ejercito told reporters.

He said there was “something fishy” in the CAAP’s inaction on such risks.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio issued on Tuesday an ultimatum to the developers of the P3.1-billion Aeon project to remove its crane that is obstructing air traffic.
