Transport  group leader gunned down

MANILA, Philippines — An official of a transport association was killed in Quezon City on Saturday night, days after he supposedly received threats from a member of the group who opposed his leadership.

Matias Cuya, 53, president of the SM North UV Transport Cooperative Association, was gunned down by two men on a motorcycle near his home along Sto. Niño street in Barangay San Antonio at around 10:20 p.m. 

Cuya died at the scene from multiple gunshots to the body.

A witness said the assailants fled after the attack.

Senior Inspector Elmer Monsalve, chief of the Quezon City Police District homicide section, said the motive for the killing could be work-related.

Cuya’s wife told probers that he had been receiving threats from a member of the transport group, who was his rival. 

The feud supposedly started after Cuya was elected president of the association of UV drivers and operators plying the SM North to Kalaw, Manila route. 

Superintendent Carlito Mantalo, Masambong police station commander, said they were conducting a background investigation on the victim.

The case was turned over to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit of the Quezon City police.
