Canada stops hiring of foreign workers

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -  The government of Alberta in Canada has stopped the hiring of Filipino engineers and other highly skilled foreign workers, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) announced yesterday.

Alberta will not process employers’ applications to
hire foreign workers for 29 jobs, according to the POEA.

Included in the “refusal to process” list of occupation are engineers, machinists, welders, plumbers, carpenters, heavy duty equipment mechanics, truck drivers as well as oil and gas well drillers and related workers.

“The job categories were selected because there is a sufficient pool of unemployed workers with those skills in Alberta,” the POEA said.

The POEA said Alberta was encouraging Canadian employers to hire local workers.

The Canadian government will provide support to companies that will hire local employees.
