More scholarship slots for OFW’s kids

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -  More children of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) can avail themselves of scholarships and enroll in college, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) reported yesterday.

OWWA chief Hans Cacdac said 1,000 slots have been opened for qualified children of OFWs who are active members of the agency.

“Interested active OWWA members have until July 31 to file their applications for the Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) for scholar year 2018-2019,” Cacdac disclosed.

He said the EDSP scholarship is granted to dependents of active OWWA members who shall enroll or is currently enrolled in any four-year or five-year baccalaureate course in any college or university in the country.

“Examinees who pass the exam and (are) able to meet all the documentary requirements receive P60,000 educational assistance per school year,” Cacdac said, as he urged OFW members to register their children who wish to apply for the scholarship program.

OWWA expanded the EDSP’s coverage early this year from 200 to 1,000 beneficiaries and included those who are already enrolled in college.

The agency also extended the application period up to six months after an OFWs’ OWWA membership expiration. Insurance coverage were also provided to all scholars.
