MAGUINDANAO, Philippines – Gunmen on motorcycle wounded in an ambush Monday a municipal councilor in Datu Abdullah Sangki town in Maguindanao.

Idris Sangki, who sustained a gunshot wound in the abdomen, is now confined in a hospital.

He is the president of the Association of Barangay Captains in their municipality.

Sangki, 45, and his 13-year-old son were on their way to the town center on board an Isuzu Trooper when gunmen riding a motorcycle trailing behind shot them as they got close.

The councilor’s son survived the attacked unscathed.

Sangki is an ex-officio member of the Datu Sangki Sangguniang Bayan, where he represents all ten barangay governments in the municipality.

Senior Superintendent Agustin Tello, director of the Maguindanao provincial police, said investigators are certain the attempt on Sangki’s life could only be either due to an old grudge or politics.

Tello said investigators are still trying to identify the culprits who immediately escaped after the attack.
