BI deploys Chinese interpreters at NAIA
MANILA, Philippines - The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has hired 12 Chinese-speaking interpreters and deployed them to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to help Chinese tourists respond to questions from immigration officers, an official said yesterday.
“By engaging their services, we are able to eliminate the language barrier that for so many years has been a source of misunderstanding and miscommunication between our immigration officers and Chinese travelers,” BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said of the interpreters, hired as contractual employees.
He said it would help the BI weed out Chinese travelers who should be barred from entering the country.
BI port operations division acting chief Marc Red Marinas previously sought the recruitment of Chinese interpreters, saying airlines did not hire their own interpreters.
BI figures show that Chinese account for around 35 percent of foreigners who are denied entry at NAIA.
