WATCH: Tornado forms in Port Area, Manila

MANILA, Philippines — A tornado slowly formed in Port Area, Manila past 4:30 p.m. on Sunday amid stormy weather brought about by the southwest monsoon or "habagat."

 

A video by Joemarie Bacos posted by The STAR showed the tornado sweeping through the street with what appears to be the sound of wind and metal clanging from a distance.

 

 

Another video by Shè Curiano-Yu posted on Facebook showed the tornado as seen from Binondo, a few kilometers away from the Port Area. Yu said it was her husband who alerted her about the tornado, which they saw as it was about to form. She decided to take a video but had to stop for a while after they saw some flying objects around it.

 

 

Tornadoes are destructive funnel-shaped rotating columns of air that pass on a narrow path over land. They are associated with intense thunderstorms and can bring wind speed of more than 400 kilometers per hour.

It can move a distance of up to two miles and last for about 30 minutes, according to PAGASA.

 

The Philippine Red Cross said no casualties were reported.
