Filmmaker Caparas posts bail for tax raps

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Filmmaker Carlo Caparas has posted bail of P60,000 for the new set of tax evasion charges filed against him before the Court of Tax Appeals (CTA).

Caparas surrendered to the CTA Second Division on Thursday after the tax court issued a warrant for  his arrest.

The CTA scheduled his arraignment on June 8.

Caparas is facing four counts of tax evasion for violating Section 255 of the National Internal Revenue Code, which sets penalties for failure to file income tax returns.

The first three counts were raffled off to the CTA Second Division. The other case was raffled off to the First Division, which has yet to act on the complaint filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ).

The cases stemmed from a complaint filed by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

The BIR said Caparas evaded payment of taxes amounting to over P101.8 million from 2006 to 2009.

Preliminary investigation conducted by the DOJ showed that Caparas failed to file value-added tax returns for income worth P850.951 million, which  he received from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office for two TV programs he produced.

Earlier, Caparas was charged with four counts of tax evasion for violating Section 108 of the National Internal Revenue Code or failure to file value-added tax returns.

The case is being heard by the CTA Third Division.
