UE tackles viral ‘flag-mopping’ video

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The University of the East (UE) has convened its disciplinary committee following a viral video showing one of its high school students using a Philippine flag to mop the floor.

The 22-second video drew flak from netizens.

The committee is composed of faculty members, coordinators and the university’s legal counsel.

“The UE community deplores the disrespectful deed, which was done in one of our classrooms in the high school department,” UE said in a statement.

The committee met with the students and guardians to investigate the matter and assess the sanction that would be imposed on the student.

“We will conduct activities for our students to be aware of Republic Act 8491 or The Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines,” the statement declared.

The university appealed to the public to be calm and patient, as it gave assurance that the incident is not part of the education and values that UE imparts and upholds.

School officials said it is exerting all efforts to deal with the matter with urgency and seriousness.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines said it has coordinated with school officials over the matter.
