PNP starts security measures for Undas

Mike Frialde - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police has activated its security coverage for the traditional observance of the All Saints’ Day on Nov. 1 and All Souls’ Day on Nov. 2, collectively called “Undas,” PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima said yesterday.

In a statement, Purisima said he has instructed all regional directors of provincial region offices as well as the Highway Patrol Group to station “road and route safety marshals” along major thoroughfares and strategic areas along the routes from and to cemeteries and other areas of public convergence.

“As what we always implement during holidays and special events, the entire PNP will be placed on full alert to provide maximum coverage and public safety services. Also, our intelligence, counter-intelligence and police operations will be intensified to preempt terrorist activities,” he said.

Purisima also ordered police regional directors to secure power plants, telecommunication relay stations and other vital installations as well as actively defend against attacks by the communist New People’s Army.

The PNP added that police assistance hubs and alert quick response teams will also be deployed as part of the PNP’s public service for the general public and motorists.

The assistance hubs and alert quick response teams will be set up along major highways, cemeteries, malls and transport terminals in coordination with local government units, non-government organizations, concerned government agencies and volunteers to prevent crimes.

According to the PNP, these teams will respond to any emergency cases when needed.
