Exec: Sustain coastal cleanup

Jose P. Sollano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – The success of the International Clean-up last week participated by the different sectors prompted city officials to sustain the coastal cleanup program.

Lapu-Lapu City Councilor Alexander Gestopa Jr., chairman of the City Council's Committee on Environment, said the cleanup should happen not only every September but everyday.

He admitted there's a need to continue educating the people, especially at the barangay level.

"Kinahanglan pa gayud hinoon nga atong edukahon ang atong mga kaigsoonan diha sa barangay bahin sa kamahinungdanon sa pagpakabana ilabi na gayud sa kalimpyo," said Gestopa.

Gestopa said barangay captains and officials, with the help of the residents and private sector, should lead the campaign.

The Lapu-Lapu City councilor said the city government lauded the resorts and beach resorts owners and operators for their full support to the city government in their program to protect the city's marine resources.

The participation of more than 100 scuba divers to the city government contributed to the success of the cleanup drive, Gestopa added.
