Shazwan, Barredo share Prima badminton honors
MANILA, Philippines - Malaysian Shahrul Shazwan and Sarah Barredo pulled off a pair of three setters to capture the singles Open crowns in the 10th Prima Pasta Badminton Championships at Powersmash Badminton Courts in Makati City recently.
Shazwan repulsed R-Jay Ormilla, 21-15, 16-21, 21-13, to bag the men’s title while Barredo kept her crown by turning back Nicole Albo, 21-19, 16-21, 21-14, to share top honors in the event organized by Prima Pasta chairman Alex Lim and sponsored by Babolat and Smart Communications through the MVP Sports Foundation.
Lanz Zafra ran away with two titles, outlasting Arthur Salvado, 21-11, 19-21, 21-15, for the 17-Under diadem then trouncing Kyle Legaspi, 21-17, 21-13, for the 19-U plum in the event which drew over 2,000 participants all over the country.
The event, sanctioned by the Philippine Badminton Association (PBA) and affiliated with the Philippine National Ranking System (PNRS), was supported by Boysen Paints, Morning Star Milling Corporation, Mabz Builders, ILO Construction, Monolith Construction, Monocrete Construction, Pioneer Insurance, Promax International, Regent Foods Corp., RFM Corp and Del Monte Phils.
Mikaela De Guzman beat Anthea Gonzales, 21-16, 21-17, for the girls’ 17-U trophy while Janelle Andres upended Aldreen Concepcion, 14-21, 21-17, 21-19, for the 19-U title.
The 15-U winners were Jewel Angelo Albo over Francis Sarmiento, 21-8, 21-15, and Anthea Marie Gonzales over Viana Meryl Antonio, 14-21, 21-8, 21-11 (15-U).
In the 13-U finals Jian Cedric Magtibay overran Mark Anthony Bernal, 7-21, 21-19, 21-15; while Marielle Alvarez beat Ma. Rheylyn Angela Pedron, 21-14, 21-19.
Winners in the 11-under were Wijel Angelo Albo over Karl Raphael Contreras, 21-12, 21-16, and Andrea Princess Hernandez over Jamila Aylah Lagradante, 21-10, 21-11.diadem.
