More benefits for barangay officials?

In her recent speech in Congress, Nueva Ecija’s 3rd District Rep. Rosanna Vergara said she has filed a bill mandating the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) to grant free insurance coverage and pension to barangay officials. 

Given the risks barangay officials are exposed to in the performance of their functions, they should be entitled to these benefits.

Many of the victims of those senseless killings during the run-up to the May 2016 elections perpetrated by men riding in tandem were barangay captains.

Vergara decried the failure of previous provincial and national officials to solve or stop the killings which she said were never brought up in mainstream media.

She has called on law enforcement authorities particularly the National Bureau of Investigation to investigate the killings which to date remained unsolved.

Only then, can we give meaning and credence to President Duterte’s advocacy to bring real peace to our crime beleaguered country. — PRUDENCIO E. MAGPAYO, Nueva Ecija
