CEBU, Philippines - A man who is included on Danao City’s drug watch list died after he engaged in a shootout with the police on Saturday evening along F. Ralota Street in Barangay Poblacion, Danao City.

At 11:15 p.m., Senior Police Officer 1 Arnold Labine received a call from a concerned citizen that a suspicious armed person had fired shots. The suspect was allegedly firing aimlessly but nobody in the vicinity was hurt.

Police later identified the man as Don Vincent Mamites, a resident of Sitio Hiway, Barangay Looc, Danao City.

Personnel from Danao City Police Station’s Special Weapons and Tactics team and Theft and Robbery Section went to the area to verify the report.

Upon arrival, they saw Mamites standing and holding his gun. They introduced themselves as police officers but he then allegedly started shooting at them.

This prompted the responding personnel also to open fire, hitting Mamites in the head and in different parts of the body.

No one from the responding police was hit.

Mamites was rushed to the Cebu Provincial Hospital in Danao City but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

The Danao City police were able to recover one caliber .38 revolver and live ammunition from the possession of Mamites.

Police Senior Inspector Alejandro Batobalonos, chief of Danao City Police Station, said they had been looking for Mamites in connection with his involvement in the drug trade. Police found no drugs on Mamites. (FREEMAN)
